우리나라 민요 아리랑이 미국과 캐나다에서 찬송가로 불려지고 있다.

"Christ, You Are the Fullness(주님은 하나님의 충만하심)" 찬송이다
미국 미시간 주의 한 교회 예배시간.
익숙한 멜로디의 찬송가가 울려 퍼지고 있다. 바로 우리의 아리랑 멜로디다.
한국을 상징하는 민요가 어떻게 세계인들이 함께 부르는 찬송가로 실릴 수 있었을까?
아리랑이 미국 연합장로교회에서 발간하는 찬송가집에
'Christ, You Are the Fullness'라는 제목으로 수록된 것은 1990년이다.
찬송가 편찬 위원회에 직접 작사한 찬송가 아리랑을 제출한 것은
칼빈대학의 버트 폴먼 교수다.
당시 후보곡만 3천여 곡이었고,
새로운 찬송가로 책에 실리는 것은 무척이나 힘든 상황이었다고 한다.
그러나 버트 폴먼 교수가 제출한 아리랑은,
미국과 캐나다 전역에서 모인 편찬 위원회의 전원 찬성을 이끌어 냈다.
버트 폴먼 교수는
"미국과 캐나다 전역에서 모인 12명의 위원과 편집장으로 구성돼 있었다.
곡조와 가사를 준비해 투표에 부쳤는데 모두의 찬성을 얻어냈다"고 말했다.
미국 찬송가 편집 위원인 에밀리 브링크는
"정말 아름다운 곡"이라며 극찬했다.
낯선 나라의 음악을 찬송가로 채택한 이유는 특별한 게 아니었다.
멜로디가 너무 아름다웠기 때문이란다.

Christ, You are the fullness of God, first born of everything.
그리스도, 주님은 만물보다 먼저 계신 하나님의 충만입니다.
For by You all things were made; You hold them up.
주님이 모든 것을 만드셨고 그것들을 붙드시기 때문입니다.
You are head of the church, which is your body.
주님은 주님의 몸된 교회의 머리이십니다.
First born from the dead. You in all things are supreme!
주님은 부활의 첫 열매요. 만물의 으뜸이십니다.
주님은 하나님 형상이시오
만물 중에 으뜸이신 창조주시라
부활하시어 다스리시니
주님은 교회의 머리이시라

Lord, help keep our heart and minds.

Let Your word dwell richly in us as we teach and sing.
